The Level 4 Higher Level Teaching Assistant Certificate is a regulated qualification approved by Ofqual demonstrating to employers that you have the necessary skills as an HLTA. An HLTA has an increased level of responsibility within the classroom, more so than a standard teaching assistant.

Unit 2: Child development and welfare

Unit 3: Awareness of special educational needs

Unit 4: Promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour

Unit 5: Providing support for individual learners and small groups

Unit 6: Developing skills to promote positive working relationships

Unit 7: Curriculum planning, delivery and assessment

Entry requirements

Before you can complete this qualification, you must be working as a teaching assistant or be able to obtain voluntary or paid work experience in a school, as the role of an HLTA is to significantly improve the classroom and have an impact on pupil progress. The time spent at the school should be a minimum of 50 hours.

Assessment

You will be assessed on your knowledge and skills through a mix of questions and activities which will require a range of responses. This will include descriptive answers and the completion of practical activities.

You will be expected to demonstrate competence and be able to reflect on your practice. Given that you will be currently working with children, the activities required for completion may be used in support of your specific job role.

Who is this course for?

This qualification is geared towards those who are already working as teaching assistants, or people want to become teaching assistants.

Requirements

As the role of an HLTA is to significantly improve the classroom you must be working as a teaching assistant or be able to obtain voluntary/paid work in a school (min. 50 hours).

Please note: This can be in either a primary, secondary or a special school setting. However, you MUST ensure that the pupils you work with are aged 5+ and are studying at Key Stage 1 or above. You will also need the support of a mentor from within the school who will confirm your competence and provide testimony of your abilities against the qualification standards.
